Spring Art Walk Planning Team

It’s time to plan our Spring Art Walk and Fundraiser! Come join the planning meeting on Wednesday, March 22, at 9 am in the front office conference room. Coordinators are needed for the following areas: Volunteers, Crafts, Artwork Display, Classroom Projects, Gift Card Grab, and Bank. There are all sizes of jobs available, leading up through the day of the art walk. Also, we’re looking for one or two people who might be interested in taking the lead on this fun event! Book-It Theater Performance

The PTA is happy to sponsor the upcoming performance of Cece Bell’s Newbery-honored graphic novel, El Deafo, on March 23 at 9:30 am. In the production, students will experience how the main character learns to embrace her difference as the superhero, El Deafo, and make some true friends along the way. Volunteers make Pancake Breakfast a success!

Community Movie

RESILIENCE: THE BIOLOGY OF STRESS & THE SCIENCE OF HOPE will be screened on Sunday, March 12, 2017, at 4 p.m., at the Shoreline Center Auditorium, 18560 1st Ave NE, Shoreline, Washington 98155 followed by a post-film panel discussion.

James Redford, son of Robert Redford and director of the award winning documentary, “Resilience”, helps us to see that there many families in diverse Communities who are unaware of adverse childhood experiences and the cycles kids are trapped in.  The good news is that outside efforts of teachers, therapists and social workers can help to break the cycle. Whether you’re a parent, teacher or neighbor, you are the external structure that helps create a positive, caring and nurturing environment.

“True resilience is not a matter of character or moral fiber,” Redford said. “It’s about finding the right ingredients to be successful in life.”

Note:  One of my hopes is that every young adult will be well-equipped for the potential stresses of new relationships and environments. We all either know or will soon come across others who have experienced significant trauma; perhaps we can all be slightly better equipped for both handling ourselves and dealing with personal & professional relationships by learning from Resilience.

Parent Ed Event – Talking with Kids About Race

On Monday, February 6, please join us at Einstein for a “Talking with Kids About Race” Parent Education workshop with Shoreline School District’s Equity & Family Engagement Director Tanisha Felder. The presentation/discussion will go from 6:30 until about 8:00. This can be a tough topic, and we are generally not good at it. Come ready to hear new perspectives and ways to open up communications around race and culture!

Kids have a way of asking questions that are not always easy to answer. When you throw the topic of race in, it can get a bit dicey. Having conversations about race is not designed to be comfortable, but the need to engage with our youth is essential to having healthy conversations as they grow and as adults, we grow with them.  The Talking to Your Kids about Race workshop  will offer awareness, skills, and practice.

Thanks to Science Night Volunteers!

thank-you-imageThank you, thank you, thank you to all of the teacher, student, and parent volunteers that helped to set-up and breakdown for Science Night, and to those that helped to run exhibits as well!  It was a super fun night, and wouldn’t have been so successful without your help.  We also give particular thanks to Mr. Owen for directing traffic in the rain, the third graders and 3/4 split students for creating thank you cards for our exhibitors,  the 2nd grade Highland Terrace Girl Scout Troop for baking cookies for our exhibitors, and to Mrs. Nye, Mrs. Holmes, and Mrs. Lee for allowing HT PTA to use their classrooms.
